The 2020 Met Gala theme has been revealed – ‘About Time: Fashion and Duration' This will mark the Met's 150th anniversary, and will be partly inspired by Virginia Woolf and the theories of the early-20th-century French philosopher Henri Bergson. Το Met Gala 2020 θα έχει ως θέμα «Για τον Χρόνο: Μόδα και Διάρκεια». Υπόσχεται να παρουσιάσει ένα «άτακτο χρονολόγιο της ιστορίας της μόδας», αγκαλιάζοντας ενάμιση αιώνα μόδας, από το 1870 έως σήμερα.

Αντλεί έμπνευση από την έννοια «la durée» του Γάλλου φιλόσοφου του προηγούμενου αιώνα Ανρί Μπεργκσόν «Χρόνος που ρέει, συσσωρεύεται και είναι αδιαίρετος», το Met Gala 2020 θα είναι επίσης ένας φόρος τιμής στο μυθιστόρημα «Ορλάντο» της Βιρτζίνια Γουλφ, ένα μυθιστόρημα στο οποίο «καταλύεται» η έννοια του χρόνου.

Και ο συγγραφέας Μάικλ Κάνιγχαμ – του οποίου το μυθιστόρημα «Οι Ώρες» βασίστηκε στο μυθιστόρημα «Κυρία Ντάλογουεϊ» της Γουλφ – θα γράψει ένα καινούριο διήγημα για τον κατάλογο της έκθεσης.

Η έκθεση στο Costume Institute θα επιδείξει 150 χρόνια fashion design, με υλικό από τα αρχεία του το οποίο θα εκτεθεί με τέτοιο τρόπο, ώστε να διακόπτει μια παραδοσιακή, γραμμική πρόσληψη της έννοιας του χρόνου.

Ο επιμελητής του Ινστιτούτου, Άντριου Μπόλτον, μιλώντας στην Vogue, περιέγραψε την εκδήλωση ως κάτι στο οποίο «φανταζόμαστε εκ νέου την ιστορία της μόδας, η οποία είναι κατακερματισμένη, ασυνεχής και ετερογενής».

«Η μόδα είναι, με ανεξίτηλο τρόπο, συνδεδεμένη με τον χρόνο. Δεν είναι μόνον το ότι αντικατοπτρίζει και εκφράζει το πνεύμα των καιρών, αλλά επίσης αλλάζει και εξελίσσεται με τα χρόνια, λειτουργώντας ως ένα εξαιρετικά ευαίσθητο και ακριβές ρολόι» τόνισε, στο AnOther Magazine, ο Μπόλτον.

Το Met Gala 2020 θα λάβει χώρα τη Δευτέρα, 4 Μαΐου (με προέδρους τους Nicolas Ghesquière, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep και Anna Wintour).

Η έκθεση – η οποία έχει τη στήριξη του γαλλικού οίκου ειδών πολυτελείας Louis Vuitton – θα διαρκέσει από τις 7 Μαΐου έως τις 7 Σεπτεμβρίου.
