O Kamui Kobayashi είχε την ευκαιρία να οδηγήσει το Seven 620 R, το γρηγορότερο μοντέλο της Caterham το οποίο αντικαθιστά το R500.

Το αυτοκίνητο φορά τον 2,0-λιτρο Duratec κινητήρα της Ford απόδοσης 315 ίππων στις 7.700 σ.α.λ με 296 Nm ροπής στις 7.350 σ.α.λ που συνδυάζεται με ένα σειριακό κιβώτιο της Sadev. Επιταχύνει από τα 0-96 χλμ/ώρα σε 2,79 δευτερόλεπτα και οι πωλήσεις του θα ξεκινήσουν μέσα στο 2013 με αρχική τιμή £49.995 (€58.000), κάνοντας το μοντέλο ακριβότερο κατά £7.500 σε σχέση με το R500. Caterham F1 Team new boy, Kamui Kobayashi, warmed up for the first Grand Prix of the season in Australia by taking his first ever drive in the legendary Caterham Seven.

The Japanese didn’t do things by halves either – his first ever Seven drive was at the wheel of the most powerful production Seven ever built and the ultimate incarnation of Caterham’s ethos of ‘accessible fun’, the raucous 620 R.

With 310bhp, a top speed of 155mph and a 0-60mph time of less than 2.8 seconds, the 620 R made its global debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last year and was put through its paces by F1 fan favourite Kobayashi at Silverstone just before he travelled to Melbourne.

It certainly made an impression on the 27-year old, who said: “For me, this is a pure car; everything else is just transportation.

“Normally, with a new car, it takes a few laps to understand it; with this car, after one corner, I understand it straight away. I feel like this is a car that I am driving, rather than the car driving me and that is a very good feeling.

“The power of the 620 R is awesome – I can’t believe you can drive this car on the road, it is definitely the closest thing to a racing car.”

Kobayashi also helped Caterham Cars launch the Seven 160 – at the opposite end of the Seven spectrum to the 620 R – for the Japanese market in Tokyo on Monday this week.
