Its research agenda addresses the great challenges related to: the mitigation and adaptation strategies necessitated by climate change, a reduced dependence on hydrocarbon energy sources and achieving a low carbon economy through the employment of renewables (solar) and enabling a sustainable management of water and other natural resources in arid and semi-arid environments.Position DescriptionThe EEWRC solicits applications of individuals interested in the organization and coordination of research on climate change and its impacts in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The aim is to help develop a research program, based on a recent climate change assessment of this region, with a focus on climate change impacts, for example associated with water scarcity and weather extremes. Tasks will include the organization of meetings and conferences, managerial aspects of the research agenda and maintaining contacts with national and international partners.Candidate ProfileCandidates must be located in Cyprus for the duration of the appointment. Candidates should have:University Degree or equivalent preferably in natural sciences or a relevant scientific fieldProven experience in research management including financial administration is essential.Experience in preparing and writing scientific reports; Involvement in proposal writing and knowledge or at least interest in the field of climate change impacts would be an advantage.Excellent knowledge of oral and written English. Description of the PositionThe Post-doctoral Scientist(s) in Atmospheric Sciences will be involved in vegetation and remote sensing data analysis and earth system modeling, with the implementation and testing of vegetation and firemodels. Profile and Requirements· Candidates should have a PhD in natural sciences, knowledge of atmospheric chemistry and related research and experience in computer modeling.· An adequate publication record and familiarity with the formulation of research proposals.· Excellent knowledge of oral and written English. The successful candidate is expected to build up an experimental atmospheric research laboratory and will lead the installation, implementation and operation of analytical instrumentation (GC, IC and HPLC) in the new CyI laboratory building. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research addressing the problem of water availability and water use in the arid to semi-arid Eastern Mediterranean and on Cyprus. Particular emphasis should lie on research related to water availability and water quality in light of anticipated changes in climate conditions in the Mediterranean Basin. This will also include the design and implementation of observational and monitoring studies linked to numerical modeling in the field of hydrology, meteorology and surface - atmosphere trace gas exchanges. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to also lead the vigorous development of the experimental infrastructure of the Center in Nicosia.ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be responsible for helping to shape and advance the Cyprus Institute’s and EEWRC's research agenda by:• developing and implementing strategies appropriate to the Institute’s mission;• actively participating in the creation of a world-class research program in water sciences;• securing financial and other resources from national and international sources;• mentoring, educating and providing research guidance to graduate students in CyI's doctoral program (particularly the Environment and Atmospheric Sciences program);• initiating and sustaining high-level collaborative projects with leading research institutions that conduct research in areas related to his/her respective fields;• communicating the results and implications of research conducted at EEWRC and The Cyprus Institute at all levels, including the academic community, the public at large and political and economical decision makers.ProfileThe successful candidate will be a scholar of international standing appropriate to the level of Associate Professor/Professor (depending on qualification) and a recognized leader in his/her field, with a minimum of five years’ experience in conducting research on water management and the assessment of climate change impacts on water resources in arid to semi-arid environments. Previous responsibility for building and leading research groups and/or managing complex projects from development to implementation is required. The selected candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills, with strong capacities for managing human resources and for maintaining contacts in the academic, business and governmental circles. He/she should have a proven track record in raising competitive resources from various funding agencies. Proficiency in spoken and written English is indispensable.
