Athens-Piraeus Ascends to Seventh in Global Shipping Rankings

The greater Athens area, encompassing the bustling port of Piraeus, has climbed to the seventh position in the prestigious Xinhua-Baltic International Shipping Center Development Index (ISCDI).

The impressive achievement underscores the region's growing significance in the global maritime industry.

The ISCDI, a comprehensive evaluation of international

shipping centers, takes into account not only port traffic but also a range of factors contributing to overall business activity and innovation. This broader perspective explains why Athens-Piraeus ranks ahead of Ningbo-Zhoushan in China, which, despite being the busiest port in terms of cargo tonnage, lags behind in other key areas.

The index recognizes Singapore, London, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Dubai, Rotterdam, Athens/Piraeus, Ningbo-Zhoushan, Hamburg and New York/New Jersey as the top ten shipping hubs.

The latest development highlights the strategic importance of the Athens-Piraeus region and its capacity to compete with established maritime powerhouses. The rise in the rankings reflects sustained efforts to enhance infrastructure, streamline operations, and foster a thriving business environment for the shipping sector.
