Avgi Newspaper Staff Strike Over Unpaid Wages and Job Security

Employees of the Avgi newspaper have announced a 24-hour strike for this week to protest unpaid wages, uncertain future payments, and a lack of job security guarantees.

The strike, on Thursday, comes despite recent claims of "labour peace" in the media.

The workers' assembly expressed dissatisfaction

with the main shareholder's refusal to reverse the decision to shut down the daily edition of Avgi and provide assurances for the payment of due wages and arrears, which total 10 months' salary per employee.

Additionally, they criticise a vague promise by Syriza leader Stefanos Kasselakis to avoid layoffs, as no specific job security plan has been presented.

The workers are also demanding the resumption of Avgi's daily publication, payment of current and past wages, and guarantees for future employment and wages.

A protest rally is scheduled for Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Koumoundourou Square, where the workers will request an opportunity to address the Syriza leadership before their meeting on the party's media situation. The workers intend to present a written package of proposals for strengthening the newspaper.
