Cool respite hits ahead of new heatwave

Meteorologists forecast a brief respite from scorching tenperature, predicting a course of changing weather patterns ahead of another heatwave set to begin on Monday.

Giorgos Tsatrafyllias says temperatures will dip by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius today, as a result of brisk northerly winds. Still, the cooling trend, he says, is a prelude to a gradual temperature escalation starting

Saturday, culminating in a full-fledged heatwave from Monday.

Thodoris Kolydas, director of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, says that despite a near 5-degree Celsius drop over the coming weekend, a significant uptick in temperatures is expected from Sunday onward.

The HNMS projects that by Monday, temperature readings will exceed 37 degrees Celsius, with a scorching 43 degrees anticipated in central Greece by Tuesday.

Today’s weather will see light cloudiness, bringing localized rainfall to central and northern mainland areas.

As the day progresses, cloud formations are likely to intensify over the mainland, leading to isolated showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the mountainous regions.

Northern winds will prevail, ranging from 4 to 6 on the Beaufort scale and reaching up to 7 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea.

While a modest decrease in temperature is expected in the central and northern mainland, the southern regions will continue to experience elevated temperatures for this time of year, with highs between 35 to 37 degrees Celsius. Western and Northern Greece will enjoy comparatively cooler weather, with temperatures hovering between 31 to 33 degrees Celsius.
