Eighty-year-old man accused of setting four fires in Glyka Nera is detained after testimony

An elderly man accused of setting four fires in Glyka Nera on 11 August, was detained after his testimony.

The 80-year-old is facing the charge of repeated arson with intent, and according to the case file is responsible for four fires in Glyka Nera on August 11, the day the large fire in Varnavas broke out.

Evidence leading to his arrest included video footage of him allegedly throwing flammable material from his car in four places.

During his testimony, the accused denied the charge. Before listening to the 80-year-old, the examining magistrate received a statement from a defence witness proposed by the elderly man.
