Greece Braces for Severe Weather with Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms, and Snow

The National Weather Service (EMY) has issued an emergency bulletin warning of a severe weather system impacting Greece on Monday and Tuesday.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and snowfall are expected across various parts of the country.

On Monday, heavy rain and thunderstorms will begin

in the northern Ionian islands and Epirus, spreading to western and central Greece, the Peloponnese, and the Ionian islands.

By the afternoon, the storms will move eastward, affecting eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the eastern Aegean islands, the Dodecanese, and Crete.

Snowfall is also expected in the mountainous and semi-mountainous regions of central and northern Greece, with heavy snow at times, particularly in western Macedonia. The snow will continue on Tuesday but with decreasing intensity.

Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vasilis Kikilias urged travelers to exercise caution and carry anti-skid chains, especially in mountainous areas.

"We expect strong rain and thunderstorms," he said, emphasizing the importance of preparedness during the holiday season.

The severe weather is expected to ease by Tuesday afternoon, but authorities are urging residents and travelers to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
