Greece Steps Up Fight Against Tax Evasion with New AI-Powered Tools

The Greek government is intensifying its crackdown on tax evasion with the launch of new digital tools and a specialized center to scrutinize the finances of wealthy individuals and businesses.

The Ministry of Finance and the Independent

Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) are implementing these measures to enhance tax collection and combat fraud.

One key change is the introduction of AI-powered systems to analyze tax filings and identify high-risk cases.

This technology will enable authorities to more efficiently audit complex transactions and uncover hidden assets, including those held offshore.

"We are leveraging technology to ensure that everyone pays their fair share," said a Finance Ministry spokesperson.

"These new tools will help us close loopholes and crack down on those who attempt to evade their tax obligations."

In addition to AI, the AADE is implementing stricter measures to prevent fraudulent claims and ensure accurate reporting. Starting this year, VAT declarations can no longer be amended, eliminating discrepancies between reported income and expenses.

At the heart of this effort is the newly established Center for Large Taxpayers' Audits (KEMEF), which will begin operations on February 17th.

This center will focus on high-net-worth individuals, large enterprises with annual revenues exceeding €10 million, and financial institutions.

KEMEF will utilize advanced data analysis and monitoring techniques to identify potential tax avoidance schemes and ensure compliance with both domestic and international tax laws. This includes scrutinizing income declarations, wealth holdings, and business transactions.

With these enhanced measures, Greece aims to boost tax revenue by an additional €500 million in 2025, bringing the total amount collected through anti-tax evasion efforts to €2.3 billion.

\The government's commitment to modernizing tax oversight and combating financial crime is expected to contribute to a fairer and more efficient tax system.
