Greek Judges Demand Greater Role in Constitutional Reform, Raise Concerns Over AI in Courts

Greece's judges and prosecutors are seeking a stronger voice in the country's constitutional reform process while also expressing concerns about the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the justice system.

These key issues were highlighted in a resolution issued by the Association of Judges

and Prosecutors (EDÉ) after their annual general assembly.

The association emphasized the need for thorough discussions and careful consideration of the implications of introducing AI into judicial processes.

They stressed that any technological advancements should not compromise fairness, transparency, or the integrity of the judicial system.

In addition to their concerns about AI, the judges and prosecutors called for greater involvement in the ongoing constitutional reform efforts.

They demanded that their perspectives and expertise be fully considered in any proposed changes that could affect the judiciary's independence and effectiveness.

The association also highlighted several practical concerns impacting their working conditions, including the need for timely reimbursement of travel expenses for judges serving in remote areas, increased staffing levels at appellate courts to handle growing caseloads, and faster processing of voluntary retirement requests for judges facing health issues.

Furthermore, the association expressed reservations about recent legislative changes aimed at unifying the first-degree judiciary system and speeding up case resolutions.

They questioned the constitutionality and effectiveness of these changes, calling for specific amendments to ensure fairness and protect judicial independence.

The judges and prosecutors affirmed their commitment to upholding the principles of a fair and efficient justice system, vowing to closely monitor the implementation of their proposals and reconvene in three months to assess progress.

Their demands reflect a broader concern about maintaining the integrity and independence of the judiciary in the face of technological advancements and legislative changes.
