Greek government champions farmers with new reforms and support measures

The Greek government has reinforced its commitment to the agricultural sector, announcing a series of measures designed to address the challenges faced by farmers and strengthen the industry.

During a parliamentary debate on a bill concerning Interprofessional Organizations, Minister of Agricultural

Development and Food Kostas Tsiaras emphasized the government's dedication to resolving systemic issues and supporting rural communities.

Mr. Tsiaras highlighted the proposed legislation as a comprehensive plan to tackle long-standing problems and meet the real needs of farmers. He underscored the importance of Interprofessional Organizations as partners in shaping agricultural policy and addressed concerns regarding transparency in the management of agricultural funds.

The minister defended the government's efforts to reform the Organization for the Payment and Control of Agricultural Aid (OPEKEPE), which annually distributes over €2.5 billion to Greek farmers. He challenged critics to acknowledge the need for modernization and transparency in the system.

Mr. Tsiaras also addressed the issue of non-performing agricultural loans, noting the government's collaboration with the Bank of Greece to introduce a special framework for resolution.

He emphasized the importance of taking decisive action to support farmers burdened by debt.

Furthermore, the minister outlined key initiatives undertaken by the government to bolster the agricultural sector, including investments in rural infrastructure, greenhouse cultivation, and irrigation projects. He also highlighted fiscal measures such as VAT reductions on fertilizers, supplies, and agricultural machinery, as well as the reinstatement of the tax refund on diesel fuel.

Mr. Tsiaras reiterated the government's commitment to the primary sector, emphasizing its importance not only for the economy but also for the cultural identity of Greece. He stressed the need for modernization and rebranding of the sector, backed by concrete actions and policies.
