Irrevocable acquittal ruling for Evangelos Marinakis regarding Noor 1

Irrevocable Acquittal ruling for Evangelos Marinakis regarding Noor 1.

In early January, the Piraeus Magistrate’s Council of Judges acquittal ruling, which decided not to press charges against Evangelos Marinakis, Evangelos Bairactaris, Nikolaos Syntychakis, and Ilias Tsakiris due to insufficient evidence, became irrevocable.

In this way, the Piraeus

Magistrate’s Council of Judges, which adopted the prosecutor’s acquittal proposal, ended a six-year investigation.
The Piraeus Magistrate’s Council of Judges, also citing the report of the Financial Police Directorate dated December 13, 2017, concluded that the transfers from shipping companies linked to Vangelis Marinakis "took place within the framework of legitimate transactions between the companies" and were in no way connected to the financing of the transport of 2.1 tons of heroin aboard the ship Noor 1 in June 2014.

In its acquittal ruling, the Piraeus Magistrate’s Council of Judges also references the investigation report of the U.S. Department of Justice's Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) dated September 21, 2015, which makes no mention of Vangelis Marinakis’ involvement. It is recalled that the operation of the Hellenic Coast Guard on the Noor 1 ship was carried out based on information provided by the DEA, which had been monitoring the vessel.

The reasoning behind the acquittal ruling includes a detailed analysis of witness testimonies presented during the preliminary investigation and judicial inquiry. Specifically, regarding the testimony of journalist Alexander Clapp, who was questioned during the judicial investigation concerning his article in the online magazine “The New Republic” titled “The Vampire Ship”, the Council deemed it unconvincing. The Council stated that the evidence cited in the article and submitted to the investigation was not only contradicted by the case file but was also inherently unreliable.
