Karalis, bronze medalist in pole vault at Paris Olympics, will 'sleep with the medal tonight'

PARIS (ANA-MPA/N. Lakatas) - Emmanouil Karalis, 24, who was awarded the bronze medal in pole vaulting at the Paris Olympic Games on Tuesday, told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA) soon after he was planning to "sleep with the medal tonight."

Karalis

won third place on Monday after vaulting 5.90 m, following Sweden's Armand Duplantis - who won gold with a world record of 6.25 m - and the USA's Sam Kendricks with 5.95 m.

After the award ceremony on Tuesday night, Karalis said he was "super happy" while he also urged people who had suffered from bullying and depression, as he had while growing up, to "speak to someone close to them, whom they trust and who stands by them. Let them take that first step, and everything else will follow naturally. That is the hard part, to speak about it."

Asked how he feels about his first Olympic medal, Karalis said "It is just starting to sink in," adding that he feels very moved. "I was thinking of all the trials I've gone through that have made me into who I am today, standing on the pedestal. I'm extremely happy for what I have achieved."
