Minister Takis Theodorikakos: "The Government is Working to Increase Citizens' Income"

Minister of Development, Takis Theodorikakos, emphasized the government's commitment to raising the income of Greek citizens, stating that efforts are focused on supporting workers, the middle class, and healthy entrepreneurship.

Speaking on Real FM, Mr. Theodorikakos highlighted that increasing disposable income is a collective effort of the entire government,

not just one ministry.

He noted that for the fourth consecutive month, prices have been decreasing, a positive sign that initiatives like the "student basket" are yielding results.

According to Eurostat data, food inflation in Greece stands at 1.8%, lower than the EU average of 2.4%. "Our policies are delivering results, and we will continue on this path," the minister stated.

Mr. Theodorikakos also addressed what he described as "endless catastrophizing" by the opposition, accusing them of using scare tactics to distract from their shortcomings.

He cited the example of the slaughter of 10,000 sheep in August and the subsequent claims of potential shortages and price hikes. The minister urged consumers to make informed choices by selecting the most affordable and best-quality products.

He mentioned that the government is considering measures to provide more alternatives, allowing citizens direct access to producers.

Regarding inflation, Mr. Theodorikakos explained that the rise in food prices corresponds with increases in the minimum wage.

He outlined the Ministry of Development's approach to controlling inflation on food and essential goods, which includes enforcing the strictest price control legislation in Europe. Supermarket representatives have been urged to reduce their average profit margins to support those in need.

A law has been passed prohibiting businesses from making profits higher than those of December 2021, with 26 major companies being monitored across thousands of product lines.

Additionally, the minister noted that penalties for price gouging have been increased fivefold, and efforts to strengthen the Competition Commission are underway.

"We are doing everything in our power to reduce social inequalities and move closer to the European average. There is still a long road ahead, but we have achieved significant successes so far," Mr. Theodorikakos concluded.
