In a thought-provoking discussion hosted by iefimerida.gr at the American School of Classical Studies, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and French philosopher Pascal Bruckner took a strong stance against the spread of “woke” culture in American universities and examined global

issues impacting democratic societies.

From rising inflation and economic strain to immigration and identity politics, the two discussed the challenges these issues pose for governments and society at large.

Mr. Mitsotakis underscored the importance of aligning economic growth with the needs of everyday citizens, pointing to the recent U.S. elections as a lesson in the consequences of overlooking public frustration over rising costs of living.

He noted that while economic indicators in the U.S. appeared positive, Americans’ real-life struggles were under-addressed by policymakers.

On immigration, Mr. Mitsotakis argued that the current U.S. administration’s approach to border policy has led to chaos, sparking frustration among legal immigrants and citizens alike.

In a pivot to identity politics, Mr. Mitsotakis argued that “illiberalism” in woke culture stifles dialogue and restricts freedom of expression.

He expressed concern that woke ideologies enforce a “tyranny of the minority” by silencing dissenting views. Mr. Bruckner echoed this sentiment, suggesting that while today’s issues are complex, they also present a unique opportunity for societies to shape their own futures.
