Mitsotakis Welcomes von der Leyen’s Support for Increased EU Defense Spending

Greek Prime Minister Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his satisfaction with recent comments made by European Commission President, Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, regarding the need for increased defense spending under the new EU Stability Pact.

In a social media post, Mr. Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of a unified European defense, noting

that he has long advocated for its strengthening.

He expressed his pleasure at hearing Ms. von der Leyen’s remarks, which indicated her intent to explore ways to provide fiscal flexibility to boost defense spending across the EU.

Mr. Mitsotakis reminded his audience that he had raised this issue at previous EU summits and had written about it in The Financial Times ahead of the informal summit earlier this week.

He reiterated the need for Europe to invest in collective defense, referencing a letter he co-signed with Mr. Donald Tusk, President of the European People’s Party, in May 2024, calling for funding a unified anti-aircraft shield for the continent.

Mr. Mitsotakis concluded by stating that the push for stronger European defense is gaining momentum, with more countries recognizing its necessity. In an increasingly uncertain world, Mr. Mitsotakis emphasized that Europe must secure its place through security and progress, requiring a broader fiscal space to allow member states to invest in defense without threatening their economic stability.

“We want a strong Greece in a strong Europe, and a strong Europe for Greece. The time to act is now,” Mr. Mitsotakis said.
