Poll Reveals Public Preferences for Greece’s Next President, Highlighting Shift Toward Political Leaders

A new Marc poll conducted for ANT1 sheds light on public sentiment regarding Greece’s next President of the Republic, revealing a distinct preference for a political leader over a technocrat.

The survey indicates that 41.9% of citizens believe

the next president should come from the political arena, compared to 22.6% who favor a technocrat.

Another 33% of respondents stated they would be comfortable with a candidate from either background.

When asked about the political orientation of the prospective president, opinions were mixed.

While 40.6% of respondents expressed indifference toward the candidate’s political affiliation, 30.7% supported someone from the center-left, and 24.3% preferred a center-right figure.

The results underscore a broad acceptance of varied ideological leanings, provided the individual is deemed competent and capable.

The poll also provided insights into how the public views the government’s performance midway through its second term.

Four in ten respondents (39.6%) evaluated the government favorably, while 35.4% rated its performance negatively, and 23% held a somewhat unfavorable view. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emerged as the most suitable leader for the role of prime minister, with 33.9% of respondents backing him. Mr. Nikos Androulakis of Pasok followed with 9.5%, and Mr. Kyriakos Velopoulos came third at 5%.

In the context of opposition dynamics, the poll revealed a growing expectation for Pasok to take on a more prominent role, with 35.5% of respondents expressing a desire for the party to lead in providing substantial opposition.

In contrast, only 7.1% expected the same from Syriza. Meanwhile, skepticism loomed over the prospects of Mr. Stefanos Kasselakis’ recently formed party, with 73.6% of respondents doubting its long-term viability.

The findings highlight the complexities of public opinion, reflecting both the desire for political leadership rooted in experience and the challenges facing Greece’s political parties in meeting these expectations.
