Seismologist Lekkas: Seismic activity now closer to Amorgos island; no main temblor apparent so far

Seismic activity is still high and developing closer to Amorgos island with earthquakes of greater intensity, Earthquake Planning & Protection Organisation (OASP) President Efthymios Lekkas said on Monday, following a joint meeting of two committees.

The midday meeting's conclusion was

that "seismic activity is now developing closer to Amorgos island, remaining high and including greater numbers than it did yesterday" (Sunday), professor Lekkas said, and he said the general agreement among experts was that "these phenomena may last quite a few days and even weeks."

He clarified that this particular earthquake activity "is not related in any way to volcanic centers and to volcanic activity, which follows its own rhythm," and was unlikely to affect the Kolumbo volcano northeast of Santorini other than cause small landslides. "This does not mean by any means that it will lead to an activation of the volcanoes, either of the caldera, or the Kolumbo volcano," he explained, as these earthquakes relate to plate tectonics, not volcanoes.

The unique characteristic of this particular seismic sequence is that there appears to be no main earthquake, he added. Although he said he did not expect a larger earthquake to occur, specialists had a working hypothesis for an earthquake of a maximum 6 on the Richter scale, in drafting operational emergency plans. "In this case, for me personally, a 6 is the most extreme of scenarios, with a very low possibility of happening," Lekkas concluded.
