Seismology Lab records 108 earthquakes on February 12

According to seismic data analysis by the Seismology Laboratory of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (excluding Machine Learning methods), 108 earthquakes were recorded on February 12.

The distribution of the epicentres shows two groups of earthquakes "probably belonging to different structures that have been activated, one to the southwest of Anydros and another to the east, both in a SW-NE direction".

According

to the announcement of the Interdisciplinary Committee for Risk and Crisis Management published on Thursday, since the beginning of seismic activity in the Santorini-Amorgos zone on 26 January until 11 February, the Seismology Laboratory has recorded over 16,500 earthquakes using Machine Learning (ML-Artificial Intelligence) methods.

The announcement also states that, as part of the densification of the seismological network in the area around the Santorini-Amorgos zone, members of the Seismology Laboratory installed a new broad-spectrum seismological station (HA.IOSI) on 11 February on the island of Ios.

The digital recordings of the station are available in real time to the operators of the Unified National Network of Seismographs (UNNES), and in a second time publicly accessible through the EIDA node of the National Observatory of Athens.

In addition, a new permanent GPS/GNSS geodetic station was installed on the rocky island of Anidros in cooperation with the Department of Geology of the University of Patras, the Geodynamic Institute, and the Geographical Service of the Army.
