Storm "Elena" unleashes fury across Greece with gale-force winds and heavy snow

Greece is being battered by a powerful winter storm as "Elena" continues to unleash its fury across the country. Gale-force winds, heavy rain, and snow are impacting many regions, prompting authorities to urge caution and preparedness.

The National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued warnings for intense winds, particularly in the Aegean

Sea and eastern mainland areas, where gusts could exceed 10 Beaufort.

These powerful winds are creating hazardous conditions for maritime travel and coastal activities.

Heavy snow is blanketing the mountainous and semi-mountainous regions of Thrace, Macedonia, and Epirus, with intensified snowfall expected in eastern Macedonia and Thrace throughout the day. Eastern Greece is experiencing increased cloud cover with local showers and thunderstorms, while western Greece faces scattered clouds and occasional rain.

Temperatures remain frigid throughout the country, with frost expected in mainland regions, particularly during the early morning and evening hours. Northern Greece is experiencing the coldest conditions, with temperatures plummeting as low as 2°C.

Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vasilis Kikilias has issued a strong call for citizens to exercise caution and be prepared for the challenging conditions. He stressed the importance of carrying anti-skid chains when traveling in mountainous areas, where snow and ice could make roads treacherous.

The severe weather is forecast to persist into Saturday, with continued precipitation and snowfall in eastern regions. Authorities are urging residents and travelers to stay informed about weather updates and take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this intense winter storm.
