Syriza Considers Louka Katseli for Presidential Nomination Amid Political Outreach

Syriza is poised to nominate Louka Katseli, a former minister in George Papandreou’s government, as its candidate for the upcoming presidential election.

Ms. Katseli, a key figure in Greek politics, chaired the board of the National Bank of Greece during Syriza’s governance from 2015 to 2016. Her legislative legacy includes a landmark

law offering foreclosure protections to debtors during the financial crisis.

Ms. Katseli’s name has surfaced repeatedly as a potential candidate, including during the 2023 election campaign, when she reportedly declined an offer to head Syriza’s state deputy list.

Party insiders cite her alignment with Syriza’s progressive policies and broad appeal as factors favoring her candidacy.

Other contenders include former foreign minister Mr. Nikos Kotzias and veteran leftist politician Mr. Giannis Dragasakis.

Syriza’s Political Secretariat will convene on Monday to make a final decision, with party president Sokratis Famellos expected to present a proposal for a unified progressive nominee.

Syriza has emphasized its commitment to institutional integrity, underscoring that its approach to the presidential election is free from partisan opportunism.

Amid the leadership deliberations, Mr. Famellos has been touring Trikala and Karditsa to assess ongoing challenges in flood-stricken regions.

During a visit to Vlochos, he met with residents who voiced frustration over the government’s delayed response nearly 18 months after severe flooding devastated the area.

Residents pointed to the lack of flood-prevention infrastructure and prolonged delays in housing inspections, which have hindered reconstruction efforts. “Levee projects must advance immediately. Flood-control initiatives remain stuck in the tendering phase, and inspections are incomplete, preventing residents from rebuilding,” Mr. Famellos stated.

He accused the government of neglecting long-term water management and infrastructure needs, emphasizing Syriza’s commitment to addressing citizens’ pressing concerns. “We heard a cry for help today.

The government’s failures have left these communities unsupported. Our proposal is simple: a strong, reliable state that stands by its people,” he said.

Mr. Famellos also met with families of the victims of the Tempi train disaster, reaffirming Syriza’s dedication to uncovering the truth behind national tragedies.

He stressed that the party would continue advocating for justice and systemic reforms to prevent similar incidents.

Syriza has also placed emphasis on strengthening local governance.

Meetings with regional officials underscored the party’s focus on empowering municipalities and addressing agricultural challenges, particularly the high production costs facing farmers and livestock breeders.

“Our presence in the field complements our parliamentary work. We are committed to finding real solutions to the issues affecting our citizens,” said a Syriza representative.

As Syriza prepares for the presidential election, its outreach efforts and focus on social challenges aim to strengthen its progressive platform while addressing critical needs across Greece.
