Tensions Flare at Syriza meeting over autumn conference date

A new wave of internal conflict erupted within SYRIZA during the Central Organizing Committee's meeting for the upcoming autumn conference.

A virtual meeting on Tuesday descended into chaos after a heated dispute between Olga Gerovasili, other party officials,

and Stefanos Kasselakis over the conference date.

Sources say that Giannis Ragkousis requested to present a proposal about the conference as Olga Gerovasili and Sokratis Famellos argued against holding the meet during the PASOK elections, advising for the congress to be pushed back.

Mr. Kasselakis is said to have angrily intervened, reacting to changes to arrangements and decisions that had already been made.

“If anyone doesn't like it,” he is said to have said, “they should leave the party. End of story!"

The warning sparked the reaction of Nikos Pappas who insisted the Syriza leader retract his threat. What is more, eight senior members left the virtual session.

Mr. Kasselakis has since then denied the tense incident having occurred.

“We will collectively modernise our party to respond to society without being bound by any interests," he said.
