Yiannis Boutaris, the renowned winemaker and former mayor of Thessaloniki, passed away late Saturday at the age of 82.

His death was announced by Kyr-Yianni, the winery he founded, in a heartfelt Facebook post.

Mr. Boutaris, a restless spirit and innovator, was a towering figure in the Greek wine industry. Born into a winemaking family, he left the

established Boutaris business to forge his own path, founding Kyr-Yianni and leaving an indelible mark on the nation's viticulture.

Beyond his contributions to wine, Mr. Boutaris made a significant impact on Thessaloniki as its mayor from 2011 to 2019. His tenure, following 24 years of conservative leadership, was marked by a progressive vision that sought to reconnect the city with its multicultural and cosmopolitan heritage.

Current mayor Stelios Angeloudis praised Mr. Boutaris as a "daring visionary" who fought tirelessly to revitalize Thessaloniki.

Mr. Boutaris's commitment to public service extended beyond his mayoral term. He served as a municipal councilor from 2003 to 2011 and again from 2023 until his passing. In a September 2023 interview with Kathimerini, he expressed his desire to contribute as an "active citizen concerned about his city."

His legacy extends beyond politics and winemaking. Mr. Boutaris was known for his charismatic personality and unwavering dedication to his endeavors.

Kyr-Yianni's Facebook post described him as "larger than life…leaving his inspiring mark at both the storied history and the future of Greek Wine. And far beyond wine."

Mr. Boutaris is survived by his two sons, who now run Kyr-Yianni.

His passing marks the loss of a true icon, but his contributions to Greek wine and the city of Thessaloniki will be remembered for years to come.
