Prices for thousands of pharmaceutical products to be reduced, EOF says

Price reductions averaging roughly 5 pct will affect more than 6,000 pharmaceutical products based on the new price list effective for manufacturers and importers as of February 17, for medicine wholesalers as of February 26 and for private pharmacies as of March 10, it was announced on Thursday.

Prices

will change for a total of 9,191 medicines, namely, 6,154 generic and 3,037 brand/reference listed and off-patent medicines.

According to the National Organization for Medicines (EOF), the new price list will have as a result an average price reduction of 4.7 pct. A total of 6,000 medicines had their prices reduced already compared with last August's price list, with generic drugs recording an average reduction of 9 pct.

As a result, the annual spending on pharmaceuticals by the Greek National Organization of Healthcare Services (EOPYY) and public sector hospitals is expected to be reduced by roughly 160 million euros and 36 million euros respectively.

The list will also include 290 innovator medicines that will be available in Greece for the first time.

Meanwhile, a total of 838 pharmaceuticals were taken off the list of medicines prescribed by EOPYY because their companies had failed to pay rebates to EOPYY as they were obliged.
