Health ministry on a hunt for staff with fake qualifications, minister says

The health ministry has embarked on a search to root out staff with fake degrees that may be unqualified for the positions they hold, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis said on Friday.

"Since the end of 2013, at my orders and those of the general secretary Pelopidas Kalliris,

the health ministry's services have launched an exhaustive inspection to ensure that degrees are genuine. We started with hospital directors and continue with everyone working at the health ministry and the bodies it supervises. Already, this stage has started to yield results," the minister said.

In addition to the doctor with fake qualifications in charge of a Skyros health centre, whose appointment had been revoked, the ministry had since discovered another woman in a senior position who was dismissed for the same reason, he added.

At the same time, he stressed that the cases were not so extensive as to engender concern about the safety of health organisations in Greece, with few cases as extreme as that of the doctor on Skyros, though the state had an obligation to root out those attempting to cheat by presenting forged qualifications, including certificates for foreign languages and high-school diplomas.
