MERS patient's contacts found negative for the coronavirus

The Centre for the Control and Prevention of Diseases (KEELPNO) is on alert after the confirmation of the first case of MERS coronavirus infection in a Greek who arrived from Saudi Arabia.

The 69-year-old patient, permanently residing Saudi Arabia, is hospitalized in a special unit of respiratory diseases, said KEELPNO that has taken all required actions for tracking and monitoring the patient’s contacts, both during his flight

to Athens and his stay in Greece. Authorities have traced all persons that came in contact with the patient including the taxi driver that took him from the airport to Amfiali in Keratsini district. They have all been tested, with the initial results coming out negative.

The Greek patient is the 10th case of MERS infection traced in the EU.

The precautionary measures recommended for protection against MERS coronavirus are those applicable to other viral respiratory infections, namely to avoid close contact with people who show symptoms of the disease (coughing, sneezing) and have recently travelled to areas of high risk (Arabian Peninsula).

"All measures for the prevention and control of the disease, as well as safeguarding public health have been taken," KEELPNO reassured.
