Samaras visits under construction ‘Stavros Niarchos Foundation’ Cultural Center

“A vision that is becoming reality,” said Samaras noting the huge importance of “Stavros Niarchos Foundation” donation.

“It is a multiple and substantial contribution to culture, economy and to the country’s environment. It will house our national Library, a modern national opera and an world-class innovative, bioclimatic park,” stated Samaras,

underlining that the 566-million-euro donation was the greatest given in recent years and “continues the tradition of major donations that in difficult times always supported the country”.

Samaras stressed the the project will be a “jewel” for the wider area and will help Athens and Greece in general, acting as an international landmark. Samaras said the project will be ready and delivered to the Greek state in 2016, at which time it will be able to attract and host up to 1.5 million visitors per year. Moreover its contribution to the economy will reach 160 million euros from its first year of operation.

“This is, I believe, the Greece that we want, the Greece of contribution and creativity. It is a work that illustrates the course of reforms, the pace our country should follow. It suits us and represents us better as Greeks,” noted Samaras. The prime minister underlined that “in such difficult hours we need these messages. And for this reason were all here and watched the unveiling of this hugely important project, completely satisfied and deeply moved, because we see before us a great dream that with your help (Niarchos Foundation) is becoming reality.”

On his part, “Stavros Niarchos Foundation” president Andreas Drakopoulos thanked Samaras for his interest and the excellent cooperation in order to make the Cultural Center completely ready when it is handed over to the Greek people, “so that it can meet the high expectations we all have.”

“The Culture Center can and must become part of the new Greece, not of the Greece of gloom and incompetence, but a Greece that will allow us to hope for a better future, to dream and attain this better future,” concluded Drakopoulos.

The prime minister was accompanied by Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis, Education Minister Costas Arvanitopoulos and Culture Minister Panos Panagiotopoulos.
