Volvo Buses launches Volvo 8900 Electric intercity bus

Volvo Buses extends its European electromobility offer to include operations outside and between cities. The new Volvo 8900 Electric is an electric low-entry bus for city, intercity, and commuter operations.

It is offered in both two- and three-axle configurations, to maximize the possibilities for efficient,

sustainable, and profitable traffic for operators.

The first versions of the Volvo 8900 Electric will be available in selected European markets during 2025.

Volvo Buses’ low-floor electric buses have been very successful; they are in daily operation in 25 countries. One of the key success factors on the European market has also been the Volvo 8900, which has been in operation since 2010. The new 8900 Electric platform builds on that success.

“It’s logical to include electrified solutions for intercity, transit, and commuter operations. The 8900 Electric is a dedicated European offer and another major step in our efforts to provide efficient and sustainable people transport solutions,” says Thomas Nylund, head of Volvo Buses Europe.

High capacity and versatility

The Volvo 8900 Electric comes in two- or three-axle configurations, with a capacity of up to 110 passengers. The driveline can be specified with one or two motors, giving a traction power of up to 400kW, or 540 hp. In combination with the modular battery arrangement of up to 540 kWh, these options make the Volvo 8900 Electric suitable for most applications in extended city and intercity operation.

Outstanding driver ergonomics

The Volvo 8900 Electric comes with several features that boost comfort and safety for the driver. A multi-function steering wheel and a dynamic instrument cluster provide a superior overview of important driver information, enhancing driver focus and control.

“Safety and passenger satisfaction start with the driver,” says Thomas Nylund, “and we also know that Volvo’s driver’s station is highly appreciated as a comfortable and rewarding workplace.”

A concept for the future

The Volvo 8900 Electric is built on the all-new Volvo BZR Electric chassis – a platform based on a Volvo Group common e-mobility architecture. This means that major components and sub-systems are manufactured in large volumes, which is an advantage when it comes to spare parts commonality and logistics. This in turn means more operator uptime. The body for the Volvo 8900 Electric will be manufactured by the selected partner, MCV.

“The Volvo 8900 Electric is a premium product with the highest quality, and it’s a product that customers have asked for. It will be able to operate different types of traffic and cater to most needs that an operator has,” says Thomas Nylund.

Enhanced safety for all road users

The Volvo 8900 Electric comes with all of Volvo Buses’ active safety systems. These include several safety features with a special focus on the protection of vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians. One example is our collision warning system. It doesn’t only react to vehicles, which is the legal requirement, but also to pedestrians and cyclists. The safety systems exceed the new EU regulations, as well as the legal requirements of most countries outside the EU.
