Production of components for the F-35 fighter in Turkey will continue to decline during 2021-2022, said Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Thomas Campbell, TASS reports.

He reminded that Ankara’s membership in the aircraft development program is still suspended.

He said that the US policy towards Turkey hasn’t changed: the production of components has been almost completely transferred to other countries

and will continue to decline.

“There are no changes in US policy regarding Turkey’s status in the F-35 program. Turkey’s membership in the F-35 program has been suspended. Most of the components’ production was moved [to other countries] in 2020, and it will continue to decline in 2021 and 2022”, Campbell said.

The crisis in relations between Turkey and the United States began in July 2019 after Washington demanded that Ankara abandon the Russian S-400 systems purchase, offering US Patriot systems instead. The country’s authorities refused to make concessions. Then the United States threatened sanctions and vowed to deprive Turkey of new fighter jets.

NEWS.ru reported earlier that the US decision to impose sanctions on Turkey, a partner in the alliance, for its purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems is regrettable, Jens Stoltenberg said.
