“Είμαι ένα πακέτο από νεύρα” (όταν φωτογραφίζω) που περιμένει τη στιγμή και αυτή πλησιάζει, πλησιάζει, πλησιάζει και ξαφνικά ξεσπάει και είναι μια χαρά φυσική, χορός, χρόνος, χώρος ενωμένα”. Αυτή η κατάσταση έκστασης που περιγράφει ο Henri Cartier-Bresson δεν είναι τίποτ’ άλλο από την αγωνία και την αναμονή της αποφασιστικής στιγμής.

Ο Henri Cartier-Bresson ήταν ένας από τους σημαντικότερους φωτογράφους του 20ου αιώνα. Γεννήθηκε στις 22 Αυγούστου του 1908 στην περιοχή Seine et Marne, κοντά στο Παρίσι. Προερχόταν από γονείς της μεγαλοαστικής τάξης και αρκετά καλλιεργημένους. O Bresson

φοίτησε στα καλύτερα λύκεια του Παρισιού και στη συνέχεια σπουδάσε ζωγραφική κοντά σε γνωστούς γάλλους ζωγράφους, μεταξύ των οποίων και ο κυβιστής Llote. Συχνάζε στους καλλιτεχνικούς και λογοτεχνικούς κύκλους και ανέπτυξε ιδιαίτερη σχέση με τους σουρεαλιστές και κυρίως με τον André Breton. Μέσα από αυτές τις σχέσεις ενστερνίστηκε την πίστη τους στη διαίσθηση και την επαναστατημένη στάση τους απέναντι σε κάθε τι το κατεστημένο “τόσο στη τέχνη όσο και στη ζωή”.
