Τα συρμάτινα γλυπτά της Ruth Asawa γίνονται γραμματόσημα

Η United States Postal Service (USPS) τιμά την ιαπωνο-αμερικάνα γλύπτρια Ruth Asawa, παρουσιάζοντας σειρά γραμματοσήμων στα οποία απεικονίζονται δέκα από τα περίφημα γλυπτά που φιλοτεχνούσε με σύρμα, χρησιμοποιώντας τεχνική στην οποία είναι εμφανές το δάνειο από τη μεξικανική καλαθοπλεκτική.

Φωτογραφημένα από τους Dan Bradica και Laurence Cuneo, τα γλυπτά είναι τυπωμένα σε σετ γραμματοσήμων των 55 σεντς.

Το πλήρες σετ

περιλαμβάνει 20 γραμματόσημα με έργα της Asawa και στο περιθώριο, μια φωτογραφία της καλλιτέχνη από τεύχος του περιοδικού LIFE του 1954.

Τα γλυπτά με σύρμα της  Ruth Asawa ανήκουν στις συλλογές των μουσείων Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum και Whitney Museum of American Art.

Η ίδια ζούσε στο Σαν Φρανσίσκο και δημιούργησε πολλές δημόσιες βρύσες στην πόλη, συμπεριλαμβανομένης μιας πλησίον της πλατείας Union Square, που ολοκλήρωσε το 1972 με τη βοήθεια 200 μαθητών.

Γεννήθηκε το 1926, στο Norwalk της Καλιφόρνιας και, κατά τη διάρκεια του Δευτέρου Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, μαζί με άλλα μέλη της οικογένειάς της ήταν έγκλειστη σε καταυλισμούς στους οποίους η αμερικανική κυβέρνηση είχε συγκεντρώσει τους ιαπωνικής καταγωγής Αμερικανούς πολίτες.

Εκεί, περνούσε τον καιρό της ζωγραφίζοντας και διδάχθηκε από έγκλειστους οι οποίοι είχαν δουλέψει ως animator στα στούντιο του Walt Disney.

Μετά το τέλος του πολέμου, τέθηκε επικεφαλής της πρωτοβουλίας για την ίδρυση του San Francisco School for the Arts.

Ήταν εκ των ιδρυτών του Alvarado Arts Workshop (1968) και έπαιξε σημαντικό ρόλο στο να ανοίξει το 1982 το πρώτο δημόσιο Καλλιτεχνικό Σχολείο στο Σαν Φρανσίσκο.

Το 2010, το σχολείο μετονομάστηκε σε Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts, προς τιμή της. Απεβίωσε, το 2013.

Ruth Asawa’s “A Line Can Go Anywhere” on view at the @davidzwirner London through February 22, 2020.
