Experts to Assess Earthquake Risk to Historic Mount Athos Monasteries

A special task force of engineers and scientists has been formed to assess the earthquake risk to the historic monasteries of Mount Athos.

The UNESCO World Heritage site, home to centuries-old buildings, has experienced an increase in seismic activity

in recent months, raising concerns about the safety of these culturally significant structures.

The task force, comprised of experts from the Technical Chamber of Greece, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, and the Mount Athos Heritage Protection Center, will monitor seismic activity in the area and evaluate the structural vulnerability of the monasteries.

"The recent surge in seismic activity at Mount Athos necessitates a thorough examination and a proactive approach to safeguarding these historic buildings," said Elias Pertzinidis, Chairman of the Technical Chamber of Greece.

Two accelerographs, devices that measure ground acceleration caused by earthquakes, will be installed on the Mount Athos Peninsula to provide critical data for assessing the seismic risk.

The task force will operate for an initial six months, with the possibility of extension. Their findings will inform strategies to protect and reinforce the monasteries, ensuring the preservation of this unique architectural heritage.
