Greek PM to Mark Cyprus Invasion Anniversary Amidst Tensions

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will attend a memorial event in Cyprus to mark the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion.

It is the first time a Greek prime minister participates in this commemoration on the island.

The event coincides with a military

celebration in the occupied part of Cyprus, attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, amidst a display of Turkish military strength.

Turkey's defence ministry issued a provocative statement on social media, commemorating the invasion with nationalistic rhetoric and a video showcasing military might. The move has stoked tensions between Athens and Ankara.

What is more, Turkey's grand assembly has also called for a two-state solution for Cyprus, contradicting international resolutions and the stance of the Greek Cypriot community, aggravating tensions at the time of the anniversary.
