Looting Casts Shadow Over Fire-Ravaged Attica

Amidst the devastation caused by recent wildfires in Attica, reports of looting have emerged, adding to the woes of affected residents.

Thieves have taken advantage of the chaos, breaking into homes and businesses left vulnerable in the aftermath of the fires.

One business owner reported catching a thief on camera stealing items from his yard,

leading to a prompt police response and the identification of the suspect.

Residents have also reported witnessing individuals attempting to enter empty homes and concerns are rising about groups of Roma people scavenging through abandoned properties.

Police have already made several arrests, including a 46-year-old Roma man caught stealing from a burned house in Penteli. While authorities are working to address these incidents, the sense of insecurity among locals remains high.
In the meantime, inspection teams continue to assess the damage to buildings in the fire-stricken regions.

So far, over 180 buildings have been inspected, with 104 homes deemed uninhabitable. The State Aid Committees are also actively recording damage to businesses, with 30 enterprises affected thus far.

The incidents of looting highlight the additional challenges faced by communities grappling with the aftermath of natural disasters. The authorities are stepping up efforts to ensure security and provide support to affected residents as they begin the process of rebuilding their lives.
