Severe Storm System Batters Western Greece

A powerful storm system is wreaking havoc across Western Greece, with 31,828 lightning strikes recorded so far.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued emergency alerts via the 112 system, warning that this intense weather, characterized by thunderstorms, hail, and significant

lightning activity, is expected to impact large parts of the country for the next 48 hours.

The storm has already caused widespread disruption, including flooding in several areas.

The storm has also caused power outages in parts of Corfu, especially in Othoni, where repair efforts have been delayed due to the severe weather.

An emergency response team from the 5th EMAK unit has been dispatched to Corfu to assist. The fire department remains on high alert, and an operational plan for flood response has been activated.

Citizens are advised to stay informed through EMY's regular and emergency weather updates on their website (www.emy.gr).

As of Monday evening, the highest recorded rainfall was 45mm on the island of Paxos.
