Aegean Airlines says passenger traffic up 12 pct in Jan

Aegean Airlines on Wednesday said that passenger traffic (including Olympic Air) grew 12 pct in January, compared with the same period last year, boosted by the introduction of a new pricing policy following the merger of the two airlines in November 2013.

Aegean Airlines said passenger traffic totaled 522,000 in January, 57,000 more compared with January 2013, with international traffic rising 9.0 pct

to 178,000 (from Athens) and to 50,000 (from Thessaloniki).

The airline company attributed this positive development to the inclusion of new destinations launched in 2013, particularly to Geneva, Kiev, Warsaw, Prague and a recovery in passenger traffic to traditional destinations such as Madrid, Brussels and Moscow.

Domestic passenger traffic grew 18 pct from Athens and 41 pct from Thessaloniki, totaling 294,000 in January. Mytilini, Chios and Samos recorded increases from 12 to 20 pct, while remote islands such as Kythira, Ikaria and Kalymnos recorded increases up to 40 pct.

“Network synergies and a new pricing policy of lower domestic fares introduced in November 2013 had a direct and significant impact on boosting passenger traffic,” Dimitris Gerogiannis, chief executive of the company said in a statement.
