A US Marine Corps Recruiter from Mississippi drowned in a Georgia river last month, according to Bibb County Sheriff’s Office officials.

Andre Armstrong, a Marine Sergeant who enlisted as a finance technician and was on recruiting duty in the Macon area, was recovered by dive teams on July 31 after he was

reported to have disappeared beneath the waters of the Ocmulgee River.

Armstrong has reportedly been hiking with a group of individuals who had decided to take a swim. He was last seen “struggling” in the water, and his friends were unable to get to him in time.

“The Marines of Recruiting Station Columbia and Recruiting Substation Macon are deeply saddened by the loss of Sergeant Andre Armstrong,” Capt. Bryan McDonnell, a Marine Corps spokesman, told Marine Corps Times in an email. “We would like to thank the local authorities who responded to the call and aided in recovery efforts.”

Armstong joined the US Marine Corps in 2013, and had deployed with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit in 2018.

His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
