An official from the Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC) said it was ready to negotiate the sale of advanced warplanes to Turkey, Sputnik Turkiye reported on Monday.

Turkey’s interest in acquiring new Russian jets like the SU-35 or the 5th generation SU-57 was previously reported following President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s

visit to the MAKS Air Show in 2019 alongside Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. However, the official interviewed stated that the FSMTC received no request yet from Ankara.

Speaking to reporters at the International Defense Exhibition (IDEX) 2021 in Dubai on Sunday, stated Russian military exports to the Middle East and North Africa reached $6 billion per year. It went onto to say this volume amounted to 40 to 50% of the volume of the nation’s military exports.

No country in the region has yet expressed interest in acquiring the SU-57 since it acquired its export license in 2019, said a Russian official according to the state-run TASS agency.

Turkey’s defence relationship with Russia has been a complicated affair for the NATO country. Last December, the United States imposed sanctions on Turkey for its purchase of the S-400 air defence system and a year earlier it expelled Ankara from the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program.
