Greece Offers €40,000 Incentive to Tackle Doctor Shortage

TheGreek Health Ministry is taking decisive action to address criticalshortages in key medical specialties by offering a €40,000incentive to new doctors who choose to train in General/FamilyMedicine or Internal Medicine.

Thisinitiative aims to attract young physicians to these underservedfields, where Greece lags significantly behind the European average. 

Doctorswho begin

their training in 2025 at hospitals with vacancies and nowaiting lists will be eligible for the financial incentive.

"Thisinitiative addresses pressing staffing gaps in hospitals nationwide,"the ministry stated, emphasizing its commitment to enhancing thequality of healthcare services across Greece.

Theincentive will be disbursed in two installments: two-thirds at thestart of training and the remaining third upon completion. 

Tofurther strengthen primary healthcare, General/Family Medicinetrainees will be required to serve as personal doctors at HealthCenters during their fifth year of specialization.

HealthMinister Adonis Georgiadis highlighted the urgency of addressing thephysician shortage, particularly in Internal Medicine, a criticalissue facing healthcare systems across Europe

Henoted that recent policy changes have already encouraged many doctorsto return to the National Health System (NHS).

DeputyHealth Minister Eirini Agapidaki emphasized the government'sdedication to supporting young doctors and building a sustainablehealthcare system

"Thisdemonstrates our dedication to creating a robust NHS capable ofmeeting the needs of all citizens," she stated.

Thisinitiative marks a significant step towards strengthening Greece'shealthcare workforce and ensuring equitable access to essentialmedical services for all.
